Apple Pie That Won in 1950s State Contest

The recipe that won the state apple pie contest in December of 1951 was the following, prepared by Mrs. Francis Woller. One thing that’s surprising about Mrs. Woller’s pie is the variety of apples used in it. They were winter banana apples - a variety not commonly used for pie making.

Pastry:
2 cups flour
1 cup lard
1 rounding teaspoon salt
1/2 cup cold milk, approximately

Cut lard into flour until mixture is finely crumbled. Finish crumbling by working flour and lard in hands. Add milk slowly using only enough to make the dough hold together.

Filling:
1 1/2 cups sugar
4 heaping tablespoons flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
Sliced Apples

Mix flour, sugar, salt and spices. Sprinkle 5 heaping tablespoonfuls of this mixture over the lower crust in 10-inch pie tin. Add apples. Sprinkle remaining sugar mixture on apples and palce upper crust in position. Bake 25 minutes at 450 degrees then reduce temperature to 350 degrees and continue baking for 30 to 35 minutes.
